How do I use a router as a jointer?

I've read about using a table mounted router for jointing boards but can't find any techniques or suggestions. Can anyone help? I have very little use for a jointer but, when I need it, I need it. I have a Hitachi M12VC mounted to the accessory table of my BT3100 and think there's more use to that setup than I'm using right now.

Not too much to add, but thought I'd point out that you don't need a two-piece router fence to do this. You can just tape a piece of formica to the outfeed side of the fence.

Compare your router fence to a jointer's bed to give an idea of required fence length.

        Regards,
        Tom

I'm fortunate enough to have a jointer (thanks to SWMBO). However, I have one of the Craftsman router tables that I got really cheap thanks to this site, and it has a shim that I can put on the fence for jointing. Never have used it (or the table...long story). Hope you stick around. I lurked here for about a year before joining and have enjoyed reading a lot of the posts and have sucked up a lot of knowledge and ideas.
