    Combining Walnut and Cherry?

This might sound off the wall and hopefully this is the right forum. My hardwood dealer fixed me up with some of the most unusual grained walnut and cherry yesterday. I don't even know what I'm going to build with it yet but can't find any examples on the net of the two woods used in the same project. Aynone used them together and pleased with the results?

    Mike.

I haven't done Walnut and Cherry, but have done Walnut and Mahagony. This is what they look like together. Walnut and Cheery would be similar.

Here's an item in Walnut and Cherry I found through google images. Looks good to me:

      One walnut and cherry guitar:

I think they work well together, but I'm a tad biased. [8D]

Thanks guys. Nice projects both and Terry, I'd say you have a reason to be biased. Looks like these pieces will be a side table for the living room.

Remeber that Cherry darkens as it ages. I set a pair of picture frames I made recently in the sun for several hours to start the process.

Thanks Don - this is my first use of cherry. Does the oxidation actually happen that fast in the sun light?

Not only does cherry darken from sunlight but walnut gets lighter. If you combine the woods, I would think hard about using an exterior spar varnish or something else with UV blocking capability to maintain the initial appearance (or at least slow down the change). I have a FWW article at home where they show the result of putting a piece of duct tape on a cherry board and putting it in the sun for 4 hours. You can see an noticable difference.

Why not just make two different projects from the the two different woods?
