    turning hard woods

    Hi all,Just started makeing walking cans to make extra money.Im retired.When working on the lathe the wood starts to chatter.how do I stop it from doing this?all the wood that I use is hard woods.the heads Im carving. the staff I make on the lathe.oak/mohoganey/ceder/walnut.

    You may be running the lathe to fast. Slow it down and see if that helps. I had that problem and it helped me.

      Light cuts. And since you mention canes I assume they are thin and long, at least compared to spindles. They need additional support. You can support the material using fingers gripping over or under the wood (once it is rounded), but that always makes me nervous. There are supports available (or you can make one) that use inline-skate wheels.

        Do a search on steady rests. Like Gerd said they can be made easily with inline skate wheels.
