Having built many a simple bookcase as end-of-year teacher's gifts for my kids (for some reason, it's the #1 requested end-of-year gift at my sons' Catholic school :-), I'd also put in a plug for Oak ply with quartersawn edging.
As for transporting it, I have no truck. But I buy my plywood at my local Lowe's. So far, they've had quite consistent and acceptable quality for plywood goods (I hate my Home Depot's ply). They've always been more than willing to make several panel-saw cuts for free if I ask politely.
I plan carefully, do my drawings on Visio (faster than Intellicad for the simple stuff), and have Lowes crosscut the sheets at least ONE INCH OVERSIZE -- Their panel saw isd accurate but it makes oodles of tearout.
For example, if I'm making low bookshelves with 30 inch wide shelves, 8" deept, I take wide masking tape with me, and tape the plywood (the guys at Lowes get a kick out of that) for two cuts at 31 inch wide each.
I'm left with two 31x48 inch pieces, and a remnant at ~33". These, I can transport in my car, and cut down on my tablesaw to finished size. A little waste, but I don't have to rent a truck (*that*, I save for when I have to re-do the library, and need 15 sheets
