    dude does box

I was let go at work a couple of weeks ago.
Decided to use my time to make boxes. This one's a miter box.

Tried my hand at mixing walnut and oak, adding some splines.

The lid is rabetted on the bottom, and top is finished with roundover bit.

    Opportunities for improvement:

    A) need a thick kerf blade for cutting spline slots. My 10 40 blade is great for most purposes.
However, the alternating bevel blade does not cut flat channel --- you can see the result when you look closely.

    b) be less generous with glue.

Nice work, This is the blade I use for boxes needing a spline, but it is a thin cut.
I am praying for patience but extremely upset that it takes so long.

Sorry to hear about your job loss.

What do you think you'll use the box for?

I find woodworking very cathartic, too. I like the wood combination.

Last night after putting the kids to bed, rather than taking a shower and then plunking my behind on the couch in front of my work computer and the TV as is my normal routine, I went into the shop, finished up a cabinet door for the kitchen, applied another coat of finish for two drawer bottoms, then called it a night. I slept great and I could feel my night bite guard didn't get as much of a workout as it usually does.

Those bumper stickers "The worst day of [fill in the blank] is still better than the best day at work" is really starting to resonate with me.

I've had that problem, too. The situation improved when I began adding sacrificial material to the surface of the sled I use to cut the slots. I use carpet tape to affix 1/8" MDF panels to the sled, then raise the blade to the desired height. It acts like a ZCTP, minimizing tearout.

Sorry to hear about your job.

Nice box, I like the grain. I had the same problem using my WWII ATB ground blade for splines. I still have my original BT3100 blade which does cut flat grooves but is even thinner than than the TK WWII. They do have a box joint blade but thats a lot of $$ for an occasional spline joint. Do you have a dado blade? The outer blades are a standard .125 and flat ground so will work well for splines. I keep meaning to make a box spline jig for the router table but its currently way down my to do list.

Nice box! Being unemployed really sucks. The shop time is great though. I hope you find something as soon as you want to.
