    A Box

Summer visitors have left, LOML is on a trip, things are nice and quiet, time to finish a project.

Outer box is jatoba and top and bottom is splatted maple with walnut stripes. Inner boxes are cherry with padauk for top, bottoms and dividers. Finish is semi-gloss polyurethane over SealCoat shellac, several coats of each.

    Thanks for looking.

    Regards, Steve.

Beaut Steve, I love how the jatoba wraps the corner! The spalted maple looks good in contrast with the other woods.

Nice work, Steve. The 'nesting' boxes inside are a unique idea.

It's a real eye catcher. Came out great. Is it a gift?

          Excellent looking box, Steve.
It may appear to be a fairly simple box at first glance. The design makes it look that way, however the skill involved was masterful. Joints look perfect.
Not an easy task with wide miters.

I am a big fan of using different types of woods together. When you do that correctly and the joints come out perfect like yours, you can command your own price.

                Thanks for all the compliments.

The joints on the outside box are lock miter joints while the inner boxes are simple box joints. Dimensions of outer box are 8 3/4 x 4 3/4 and 6 high.

I don't know yet if it will be gift; alternately, I donate them to local fund raising activities of non-profit groups. Its probably just me, but I do not sell them - - feels too much like a job for this old retired guy.

                Regards, Steve.

                  Hey Steve,
Just saw this now, as usual I'm late. Really nifty box, "You do nice work", as my late mother used to say. Giving it away to someone special is waay nicer than selling it for a "reasonable" price, whatever the heck that means.
Stuff this nice is ment to savor, keeps you thinking and trying to top it with the next one. And there's just got to be a next one.

Steve - very nice job ... regarding the Lock Miter joints on the outside box ... what bit did you use? All of the LM bits I have ever seen were way too big for that thin stock ...

Steve, the box looks great. I especially like how the wood grain continues around the corner. Beautiful work.

                        Bade,
Sorry it took so long to get back. MCLS offers several sizes of lock miter bits.

                        See http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shops...it_2set_anchor

The bits for thinner stock seem to take more time and care to set up (at least for me), but IMO, the finished product justifies the time spent.

                        Regards, Steve
