Quick and dirty box to gift

My boss suddenly announced her retirement, and I had practically only a few days before here 'go away party'. I liked her a lot, so wanted to give her something nice. I thought a pen, but did not want to remind her of the office!

I ended up with this small box. Dimensions are 8.5" x 4" x 3". Use Padouk and Wenge. The wenge was actually bought for turning!

There were some dings and such that did not fully go away at the end. I wanted to give a strong overcoat, so used an external poly, and that was my biggest headache - it just wouldn't dry fast enough. I could only take pictures at the last minute - as you can judge. The flocking was a pain, but turned out okay.

I think I could have done better in imitating the US flag - the area below the 'stars' could have had the stripes too, if I had planned it better.

I am rather (maybe inordinately) proud of the rabbets on the box case - left very little edge visible - particularly because the material is all just 1/4" thick. I should have done it for the lid too, I guess.

The end result was very satisfying : in that party, where she got a ton of other, expensive gifts, she had tears in her eyes when she held this small box in her hands; she said it would become a heirloom in her home, and I guess that made my late nights worth it!

Nice job, sounds like she really liked it.

I understand about being proud about the small jointery. Sometimes I think it's more challenging working at smaller scales. Just a little bit of tearout can make a big mess.

Sweet! That's a very interesting design on the lid - nicely conceived.

        Well done.

The box gets an A+, the photography gets a D-,

Seriously, great work, keep doing such nice things.

pfff... The box is great and the photography is fine. I can see it clearly, what more could you want?! Good job and by her reaction, mission accomplished

Beautiful design and I'm sure she'll remember who she got it from long after the other gifts are forgotten.

Very very nice! Can't show it to my wife, she loves boxes. I can see why your boss was so happy.

Thanks for the nice words, guys! I knew this would be an appreciative audience whose opinion counts for me!

I do have to say Padauk surprised me : I like the orange glow of its finished surface provides a great 'pop' to such small projects.

I used wenge, but it did not turn as dark as I wanted. Am considering walnut for the dark wood next time - should be darker, right?

I've heard a lot about Ebony, but don't find it easily.
