    Cube in a Cube

I finally got around to making a cube in a cube. I've been wanting to for awhile. I made this out of ash, since it was the only non-laminated 3x3 I could find (a local company sells them as bat blanks).

It's far from perfect. It was not square after I trimmed it down and the "good enough" really shows that it was not good enough . This was my practice and I just put some Danish oil on it. I wasn't too particular on my sanding, either. It has seen plenty of handling over the holidays, so it has a broken in look.

It was a lot of fun to do. Here is the original video I followed:

Very nice. I've been wanting to do one of these for a while. Yours looks great. Like anything, the next time you make one it will be close to perfect.

Me too! I was looking at the pepper mill blanks as a source of wood from woodcraft. Nice work. Did you find separating the inner cube to be difficult?

Separating just takes patience, which I don't have much of. I got in a hurry towards the end and instead of just going back and adjusting the DP for another 1/32" pass or so, I kept putting too much pressure on the bit to free it. The result was extra circles gouged into the wood in the center cube from the spurs of the bit and an extra large center hole. The inner cube is a real PITA to sand, so next time I will take my time...
