    Mantel for my parents

Finished up yesterday on a new mantel for my parents. They're fixing up an old house that had a simple brick fireplace. They tiled over the brick and had me do the finish work.

The finished mantel will be painted white. I used pine for the sub-material and poplar for the face sides. I also custom made the plinth and pilasters

Forgive the pictures. They're from my cell phone.

Nice proportions. I'm assuming is a gas only firebox.

Did you make the dental moulding? If so, how'd you go about doing it?

Dentil moulding can be done like box joints.

I did everything but the dentil, cove, and half round. I didn't have the time, to do the dentil. It's hard to tell from the picture but, I also cut 4 v notches into the pilasters with equal spacing.

I also used a 1/8" round-over bit on all exposed edges. It gave it square look with a soft touch and easier visual transitions.

            Yep, gas only.
