Awhile ago I asked for help in identifying wood used to build some furniture in my son's and DIL's house (
http://www.bt3central.com/showthread.php?t=51211) and, based on the responses, we settled on alder that would be stained with Minwax "Colonial Maple" stain. I also posted an early progress report (http://www.bt3central.com/showthread.php?t=51595).
Well, its finally done, except for a foam cushion for the top, which has been ordered. Pictures are attached. Except for the plywood, the chest is built entirely out of alder, with the individual boards splined together, side by side. Inside finish is two coats of SealCoat followed by two coats of gloss polyurethane. The outside is finished as:
1. two coats of stain conditioner,
2. two coats of colonial maple stain, allow to set for at least 48 hours.
3. two coats of polyurethane (satin finish) diluted about 40% with mineral spirits, wiped on, 24 hours between coats,
4. two coats of undiluted polyurethane, brushed on, at least 24 hours between coats.
Since I don't have access to spraying equipment, the final coats were applied with each surface horizontal to reduce running and pooling of the polyurethane. This produced a very smooth, flat finish without runs or drips (unusual for me).
I was a little apprehensive about the stain color, but it turned out, IMO, better than I had expected and I am pleased with the choice of alder.
Thanks for looking, regards, Steve.
