    Wine bottle stopper...

I finally got some time to do something quick in the shop, I have not really been in there for anything in about 8 months, just too busy! My wife asked me to make some wine bottle stoppers for her friend, and here is one of them.

Osage orange, it was fun to make. Polished with EEE and shellawaxed.

That's nice looking Keith. Makes a good gift item. Do you use mostly cut offs and scraps (if they can be called that), or do you buy stock expressly for the items. Is there a large selection of the fittings?

Looks good Keith. Where did you get the stopper kit from? Penn State?
From the "deep south" part of Canada

That is very nice and would be good gifts. Of course at my house, the caps screw on/off the wine bottles!

Cabinetman, I use scraps and off cuts regularly for pens, as I tend to use figured wood in a lot of my larger projects and that typically makes for nice turnings. This particular stopper was a piece of wood that I purchased for this project. I just don't end up using a ton of 8/4 stock that is really suitable for small turnings. It has happened before, but it's rare, I made a couple of magic wands for halloween a couple of years ago from scraps, for instance.

As for the fittings, there is a surprising market out there for these kits, this one is from the local Rockler, but penn state industries has a ton of these as well.

They are great gifts, I did pen and pencil sets for everyone a few years back, a lot of fun in the shop and gave gifts with a value far higher than the cost.

Thanks all for the kind words. Turning is something I only do occasionally but is a LOT of fun. Only my planer makes a bigger mess faster! Next project is the rest of the kitchen cabinets, so that'll be a biggie.
