    Loft Bed

I finally finished up the loft bed for my daughter, well mostly finished. After getting this far, we decided to hold off on the built in desk until we are done moving with the Army. But this really adds to how much space she has in her room now.

What do you think? I have a few pictures of just the best, before it was all decorated but these are what I have available for now.

It looks really good. Did you attach the loft to the wall? I'm just curious how much sway that loft has since the bracing is all in the upper framing.

      Thanks.

I did not attach it to the wall, but it is right up against it. As for the sway, it is actually very minimal. I got up there and rocked a bit to see how it felt before I let my daughter climb up and even with me, it did not move much at all. The intent was for the desk to add support to the bottom half of the bed and since we are not adding that yet, I have a support beam I am going to attach to the back side of the bed at about the desk height.

I like that! Is the book case a part of the structure, or just sitting up against it?

            Thanks Chris.

Larry, the shelf is designed to be attached to the 4x4 posts from the inside, but since the bottom of the headboard actually holds the shelf down, I did not need to attach it.

The entire bed is designed to be taken apart so it can be moved. Since I am still in the Army, it needs to be easy to move.

            Thanks,
            Dave

That's really quite nice. I'm sure your daughter loves it.

                Joe,

Thanks. She loves it and isn't too shy about showing it off either.

That looks excellent. How much did materials run you, if you don't mind me asking?

I don't mind at all, but I don't have the receipts with me at the moment. I can give you a brief rundown on the materials though, at least what I can remember off the top of my head.

4 - 4x4x10' Legs (Only needed an 8 footer, but the 10 footers where much better quality wise.
2 - 2x6x8' Bed Rails (I planned them down to just about 1 1/4 inches just to clean them up a bit.
2 - 2x6x6' For the headboard and footboard caps
2 - 2x4x6' for the headboard and footboard
1 - 2x4x8' for matress supports, ripped down to 2x2 or so
21 or 22 - 1x2x6' for the slat roll to support the mattress
                    4 - 1x6x6' - headboard and footboard material
                    2 - 1x6x6' Ladder
                    3 - 1x6x8' Steps
I cannot remember how many 1x8 I used, but they are used in the headboard and footboard as well.
1 set of locking bed rail connectors, go them from Rockler, I think about $15 a set
And a bunch of screws and nails.

I built it mostly from pictures of other beds and I don't think I actually drew one plan, but I did do some math to get the ladder steps spaced right.

Excellent job and it looks great. You're wife (I'm assuming of course) did a really nice job with colors in your daughter's room as it looks very bright and cheerful.

                      Well done....

Thanks. We're still trying to decide if I'm going to take on a pair as a project or find a couple on Craigslist.
