    Maloof dresser finished

The Maloof dresser/changing table is done.

Solid walnut carcass. Maple drawer runners, maple drawer sides, poplar drawer
backs, plywood drawer bottoms. Finished with 3 coats Roland Johnson's hot-
rod varnish, then 2-3 coats shellac to seal in any odor, rubbed out with 600
grit wet/dry, then wax and steel wool. Drawer insides sprayed with shellac.

Continuous grain flow on the drawer fronts.

Details of carcass and drawer construction in Projects section

I have no idea how Sam Maloof would finish the back of his cabinets but I
can't imagine he'd slap in a sheet of plywood. I had enough leftover wood to
make a frame and panel back. I resawed the panels and I'm really happy with
the way they turned out. Our daughter's name means "angel". I think each
of the 4 panels kind of look like angel wings.

This is the first piece I've made for someone else. Kinda' weird. I even signed
it over to the daughter-to-be on the inside. I promise to look the other way
if she takes crayons or markers to it. I did tell my wife I'd need it back in
August so I can submit it to the local fair. I want the big ribbon this year.

    Thanks for looking,
    Paul

      That is one nice piece.

I can see your friends daughter giving it to her kids one day.
They probably didn't think of that one yet.

Thank you. Actually it's for our daughter. A friend, who is a pro photog, is coming over to take some good pics for me.

Nice clean lines on a simple and very functional design. Good job on the grain match-up and the choice of walnut was very sound. Actually Maloof would probably use ply (ply comes in about every species if you have access to a good hardwood source) for the back dust shield as the piece will not likely free stand so the back is showing. So.. extra kudo's for going the extra mile to build a solid back panel.

Question.. are the round dark plugs for screw covers or dowels?

              Very well done Paul...

Great woodworking. Also nice balance with the drawer pulls. Do the drawers slide on the bottom of dividers or are they suspended somehow?

Thanks to everyone. I give all the credit for design to Sam Maloof. Except
for the pulls, I copied one of his pieces as closely as I could from a picture I
saw. The only artistic license I took was with the back.

Not the most challenging piece I've done but it was fun to "reverse engineer"
it from the picture as some of you probably saw in my Projects discussions. I
also tried out a lot of new finishing techniques, too. I love that I can't snag
                        any clothes on any corner.

Screw covers. I know Sam used screws to reinforce the joints of his chair
and then plugged them. I did that, too. I used real wood screws, not drywall.
I did not want to risk having them snap. I would have used Miller Dowels for
the drawers, but they weren't in stock. I used trim head screws with walnut
plugs. In the carcass, it was wood screws with ebony plugs. This thing is a
                        tank.

Drawers slide on the internal webframe--not suspended. I put teflon slick
tape on the bottom of each drawer side.

Genius decision on Sam's part to inset the drawers. If the drawers are just a
little cock eyed, you can't tell! The inset is far enough back that the
combination of depth and shadows hides all mistakes. I aspire to one day have
                        the design sense he did.

Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous. I thought I was doing well for our first when I took a dresser, cut it down and reworked the top to be a changing table.
