Last year I posted pictures of a sideboard I made for our sunroom/breakfast nook. I have made a desk to go with it, but I wanted it to match and not have the wasted space of a kneehole or chair space because it would only get casual, infrequent use as a desk. So here it is finally finished. The wood again is ambrosia maple with the carcass this time done mainly with cherry. They seem to go together well. The top drawer is a false drawer as it would have been too short to make any sense. There are shelves on each side behind the doors. Obviously from the picture the top slides forward to create space for sitting in the front and to reveal storage areas in the back. It can lock either open or closed. The top is slightly decorated with stone beads set deeply in the top and conected with string inlay. The whole peice is finished in precatalyzed lacquer. I think this piece required more thinking and planning than actual woodworking. And yet, when people see it, it still comes down to the touching of the top to feel how smooth it is.

That's a really cool design and use of space. The cherry and maple looks good togeather, and it'll look even better as the cherry darkens over time.
When I first open the thread I saw the photos before I read the text, and I was thinking how one would bash their knees using it as a desk. Nice job with problem solving and woodworking.ErikComment

Beautiful choice of woods. The design is unique. The slide out top is practical both as a desk top and a concealed storage area.Don, aka Pappy,

Wow, what a piece of engineering! That is one nice piece of furniture. I would think there would be a market for a desk like that.Larry R. Rogers
