    Bed project finished

So finally my 2 y.o. sleeps in his "big boy bed"! The stain came out redder than on my test pieces but that happens sometimes I guess The stain was 1 drop of transtint's Reddish Brown to 1.6ml of General Finishes Light Brown. The topcoat was GF's High Performance Polyurethane. You can see in the second picture, the lighter areas would have matched the overall color of the crib's head/footboards better. The bedrails are connected to each other with 1x2 pine slats in 5 locations with 2 separate sheets of ply meeting in the middle slat. This was necessary as the width was over 48". Negligible deflection was noted with both of standing in the middle while putting the screws into the plywood. I might still add a center support post at a later time.

The guard rail was a last minute request and was made out of doubled up plywood scraps and veneered with resawn red oak. The dowels are some type of chinese hardwood that home depot sells. They smell strongly of tea when cut. It is 4' long by 22" high and currently is jammed between the mattress and bedrail. It is quite firm there and may not need to be anchored further.
    Thanks for looking.

Great job and looks good Chop.... I'm working on a Mission twin at the moment and can relate. I like the color but you mentioned it came out darker in test before-hand. Did you sand the test scrap to the same level exactly as the real deal? If you went farther on the real thing in grit it burnishes somewhat the higher you go and will allow less stain to penetrate depending on the type of stain. Especially so with oil and dye stain.

      Very well done...

        Turned out pretty darn good.

I might have done something with the old ends os the crib and fabbed them into the guard. They had some neat curves. I'm assuming that you didn't want to hack them up as the piece might be used as a crib again.

Looks very nice. It will see more than one generation. I built my daughter her big girl bed when she was five and it still looks like new today( she's fifteen).

Excellent! I've seen stuff in stores that didn't look anywhere near that nice.

                I think it looks great.

I've struggled with matching stains and never come that close.

                    Thanks everyone

He does love it, its so much more room for him to sprawl out on. He's big for 2.

Sarge - I did everything the same except for on the finish piece I wiped off the stain since I was using a larger foam brush. On the test pieces I used a small foam brush and actually just left the finish on without wiping. It was the weirdest thing..

Pelligrini - exactly. I was figuring the kids would take these beds with them and with luck in the future they can put their kids in them if they still meet all the safety codes by then

Again thanks to all for the comments. I put a v-groove between the red oak top and the birch ply to hide the mating of the two - i figured that there wasn't enough clamps in my shop to make it perfect so be artistic about it

Now that's an awesome looking bed. Great job, Justin!

My daughter turns 3 in August but she's still in the crib I built. Her bed should be done before the end of the year. Thanks for sharing!

                      Kind regards,
                      Chris

That looks great! You make me feel guilty as my 2 year old is sleeping on a double on the floor, I'm just too busy to build his bed yet.

As to the finish, different pieces will take differently sometimes, not sure what you could really do about it. Looks pretty good to me though.
