    Hanging Mirror Progress Report #2

Well, almost finished. The mirror will be installed by the daughter after it arrives safely in Oregon. Not that I don't trust the shippers, but . . . . . .

The frame was finished by using two coats of a MinWax stain mix (1 part Jacobian, 4 parts Early American) followed by a coat of thinned Seal Coat (1 part alcohol, 2 parts Seal Coat) and then two coats of Liberon Wax in Medium Oak. The stain and Seal Coat were allowed to dry at least 24 hours before the next step. The wax was applied with #0000 steel wool to knock down the gloss from the Seal Coat and then buffed after the wax set for at least 1/2 hour. A piece of unfinished oak is shown for comparison purposes.

The hanging arrangement came from this website, in a previous post on this same topic.

A special thanks to all who offered suggestions all the way from assembling the frame, hanging it, and its final finish.

    Regards, Steve

That came out beautifully. I'd say I especially like the finish, but that wouldn't do the rest of the project justice. Nice job!

I really love that mirror, Steve!! But then again, if you love A &C furniture what's to not like. Isn't it funny the way the stain came out differently between the front and back of the mirror - the back to be more Jacobean, to my eye. Again, love it and beautiful.
          Blessings,
          Chiz

            Chiz,

            Thanks for the kind comments.

The color difference between front and back is more an effect of the lighting and use of a flash than from any differences in staining. I had the camera set for 'automatic' flash, hence the difference. In real life they look the same.

I ended up applying three coats of wax and hope to get it shipped out this coming week.

            Regards, Steve

Yea, I was trying to comment on that effect but got in a hurry. Still, it's interesting how various means of illumination have their own effect on color. Did I say that I loved it?
