    Mantel Shelf

This is my first paid project. A co-worker of mine has been remodeling his house and the old mantel wouldn't do. The old mantel was basically a 2 x 8 on top of the brick.

The new mantel I designed and built is 9" tall and 10" deep and 11 1/2' wide. All material is SYP and primed as shown. I'm going back tomorrow to do the final painting.

I bought the molding for this one. Since I was being paid to build it, I factored the cost of the molding into the job.

          Good job Justin.

You may have some wood working projects ahead now once word gets out. It is satisfying to do work like that and get paid for it. Oh oh, you're no longer an amateur, but rather a professional wood worker!

It looks nice, and I'm sure it will stand out even more when finished.

Looks terrific. How did you attach to the brick?

I actually attached the mantel to the wall. I used a 2x8 against the wall, secured by the new, no pre-drilling lag screws attached to the studs. I then used 2x4's to block out the structure from the wall. These 2x4s were also supported by metal hangers, with the hangers being screwed to the wall. I then built out from there. My customer commented that he could tap dance on top because it was so sturdy. The rest was attached with a nail gun and brad nailer for the molding.
