    Dining room table

OK, maybe not entirely done. Still have the leaves in the shop but they'll be ready by Thanksgiving for dinner. Thanks to everyone who gave advice, I did several firsts on this one including bent lamination and cutting my own veneer for said lamination on the skirt, and cutting large heavy circles and working with mahogany. Of course, I see every mistake and boggle I did but LOML loves it so that's what counts. The design is from Wood magazine.

    Finish schedule -
Stain with equal parts General Finishes Antique Cherry, Spiced Walnut, Mahogany
Fill Grain with Behlen brown and sand
    Restain
10 Coats 2# blond shellac (never mixed my own before).
    Sand flat
    2 Coats Arm-R-Seal
Let sit unmolested for 2 weeks.

    Next is the chairs...

That is some finish! Great job. I am assuming that the pedestal will remain fixed and the top will extend to accommodate the leaves. Any designs in mind for the chairs?

Thanks! Yes, the pedestal is fixed, I got 28" equalizer slides from Rockler so you just pull one end and it opens up. The chairs are mission style and I can't decide if I like them or not (or more important, does the wife like them).

Fantastic! The finish is almost too pretty!

Great looking piece and you have executed well. I have a re-make of a break-fast nook table on the agenda for soon myself. Your wife should be proud of this piece. Good luck with the chairs as they are a definite challenge. Not so bad once you get the first one done but finishing alone can be a chore. I did my first set about 3 years ago and frankly... I will leave that task to the chair-makers as it is an art in itself.

BTW... I would let her chose the chair style regardless of what you think as that way she can't second guess you being a part of the decision if she doesn't like them after the fact. Diplomacy and using your head in an attempt to stay a step ahead is the key to a good relation-ship IMO.

Very well done... you and she should be proud!

Beautiful in every way! Well done.

As Sarge said, chairs can be a challenge. I hope you don't expect to have them done by Thanksgiving!

If you get a chance please post a pic or sketch of the chairs you are thinking about. Even better if you care for the collective woodworking opinion of the site, post it as a separate thread with a poll

Beautiful piece of furniture! I bet it was hard not hurrying through that finish process. The finish is so deep, it looks like that cabinet behind it is passing right through the table!
