    Hidden Desk

    Finally finished my Hidden desk.

This desk was thought up a few months ago. Our old giant desk occupied our extra bedroom, which will soon be our daughters "big girl" room. The old particle board desk was to be given away and we needed a replacement. The new desk home was to be on our first floor adjacent to our living room. Since this desk was to be in plain sight, we needed it to hide away. We wanted all the functionality of a regular desk with the look of a piece of family room furniture.

The desk shell is constructed with oak ply, with solid oak facing. The top is oak ply trimmed with oak 1x2 around the perimeter. The top drawers are oak facing with a simple pine box with runners. The middle laptop drawer is pine box with oak ply bottom. Inner drawers are made with pocket screw joints, all of oak ply. Inside bottom left drawer is a filing cabinet. Bottom right, inside drawer houses the printer with a slide out tray for easy access. All wiring hooks up inside and our of the way, and is attached to an internal mounted power strip.

Finish is minwax mahogany stain, with 5 coats of wipe on poly, finished with #0000 steel wool.

Overall, I learned a ton in building this piece. It is by far the most elaborate piece I've made. Of course it has its flaws that only I can see, but it should last a long time.

I took the pictures with the flash, so the finish looks glossier than in reality.

Nice job. It reminds me of the old Field Desks we have in the Army.

A lot of function in a small area, and good looking to boot. I like it!

Very well done, Justin. You took on quite a bit with all those drawers for a first major project and from the results you appear to have done well. You probably won't dread hanging a drawer in the future with all the work you got on that one. The concept is unique and you meet the challenge of hiding the desk features well.

Build more.. post more finished projects as we await.. and in all like-li-hood... so does your wife? ha.. ha..
