    Sun Room Furniture

The LOML wanted matching furniture, in oak, for the sun room. Here is what she got . . . .

They are finished with two coats of Black Buffalo Wax (Medium Oak) to highlight the grain and topped off with two coats of Johnson's Paste Wax. No other finish was used. We looked at using poly-U for the top plant shelf, but she prefers the waxed finish. She plans to use a plastic tray under the plants.

Wood is red oak from the Borg. The slight apparent difference in color is due to lighting difference (garage/workshop vs. sun room).

    Thanks for looking, regards, Steve

Some nice looking furniture for the sun room. Have you used the wax combination before? It will be interesting to hear how it holds up in the heat and sun. One good thing is it's easy to repair if there is a problem.

I have found with plant stands ceramic tile with thin rubber feet hold the plant up off of the wood and makes for a nice visual counterpoint. The tile keeps clay pots in a clay dish from needing a plastic liner under them.

Bill, strange weather today, out front it's pea soup fog and out back it's sunny blue sky.

Nice work. I would suggest a cork or at least cloth liner under the plants the help with condensation.

Just started another project and almost missed this Steve. Nice work. I built my lady a red oak shoe rack very similar to the plant stand but is has shelves spaced every 12" from the bottom to accomodate her Emelda Marcos collection. And I simply finished it with well.. Black Bison Medium Oak which is holding very well even with shoes being taken off and put back on. I'm also not sure how it would react to sun but... it takes less than 30 minutes to re-wax so.. not a large gamble IMO.

          Well done...

            Thanks for all the comments.

We know that we may have to re-wax from time to time, but the use of the wax finish makes that pretty easy -- as compared to the more durable, and difficult to refinish, urethane.

The "new" part of the project for me was to use a mortise and tenon system for the shelves in the plant stand. I used a router to cut both the mortise and tenons and all seems to have come out fine. The upper shelf in the library table is adjustable, while the lower shelf is just sitting there, held in place by its own weight.

We will have to see how all that holds up in the heat - cool cycles of the sun room - - especially in the winter.

Thanks again for the comments, regards, Steve
