    Blanket chest wedding gift.

Daughter was married this past weekend, as a wedding gift the wife asked me to make them a blanket chest. Here are a couple photo's of the completed project.

Found a plan in WoodSmith magazine, the wife asked for a few adjustments in width, overall height and drawer height.... so none of the original plan dimensions were followed.

One of the sons is pretty artistic so he added a signature line to the bottom along with woodburning a Desert Sheep head as the new Son-in-Law is a guide/outfitter specializing in sheep hunts.

Very nicely done and I'm sure will be appreciated, Big Sky Man... Did you use red oak ply on the carcass assembly?

      Well done...

The chest was from a plan from WoodSmith magazine (issue 145). The wife requested some modifications in width, height and drawer height so all the dimensions are different from the plan. 3/4" Red Oak ply was used for the ends, the top and the two inner dividers.

The front and back are solid construction frames with 1/4" Red Oak Ply for the panels. All the sticking and moldings were made with just a couple different router bits.

Beautiful job, Stan. I have orders in from the youngest for a blanket chest so this thread caught my eye. What are the tabs all around the inside of the lid - seen in the woodburning pic?
          Blessings,

            Look like pocket screw holes.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

As LinuxRandal said, they are pocket screw holes.

Stan, that is an awesome piece!!! I really love the build
Can you tell me more about the base assembly? I wanted to do something similar to that recently on a project, but stopped because I didn't think that a mitered joint would holdup well to supporting the weight of a case as well as being moved/dragged around. Again, really nice work!

A beautiful gift, Stan! The trim work really sets it off.

Chop, my wife has a cedar chest with mitered corners on the base that has been moved over half the globe and is still holding up after 35 years.

The plan was from issue #145 of Woodsmith Magazine. If you don't have that issue, PM me and I'll see about getting the article/plan to you. I'm sure the article 'splains it much better than I could.
