Router Fence

I didnt get much shop time this weekend but did manage to make a new router fence.

Mostly 3/4" MDF with Phenolic ply for the faces.

I have a couple of minor things still to do but it is basically finished.

Be sure to seal the edges of the ply. That phenolic face can wrinkle very slightly if it gets wet.

What are those holes for on the back side of the fence? Was that part of the previous fence?

Thanks guys I had been using a board attached to the backside of the BT fence. I knew this would get old quickly and as I have a long line of projects to do I figured I should make myself a decent fence before I went any further.

JR - Its actually a dark brown which is the color of the Phenolic. I have seen bright red phenolic but have never managed to figure out where to get it. how about red faces with a racing stripe -

Pelligrini - The holes are to cut down on wind resistance Seriously its simply where I screwed through the back to hold on the top T-track top facing.

I gave all the MDF a couple of base coats of shellac and then top coated the important parts with some wipe-on last night. I have found a small but very annoying issue this morning. Where the two moveable faces meet in the middle they are not perfectly flush at the bottom. Its not much but just enough to cause a tiny lip were stock could catch.

The faces were cut from a single piece so should match at the join. I switched them around but its still there. I am guessing there may be some uneveness in the finish underneath I will have to investigate.

I just found the issue. The surface underneath is dead true and flat. The Phenolic, however is not! Even across the very short distance of the fence facings (24") the variation in thickness is as much as 0.009" If it was one continuous piece I dont think it would matter as much but by splitting it I think it makes matters worse. As I now recall this is why I ended up NOT using it for my router table top. Its a great slick surface but I think the phenolic coating has introduced the uneveness. I may have to revert to MDF or Melamine faces.

I remade the fences for my router fence today. I ended up using the same HP laminate particle board as the table as I had a piece just the right size left over.

Everything now matches up perfectly and this will work out better as the light surface will let me add marks for stopped cuts etc.

The laminate surface was already pretty smooth but with a nice coat of paste wax they are really slick. Used it this afternoon to finish up a large stack of new ZCTPs and it was a dream to use.
