    First (small) "Fancy" Box

Got home from vacation Saturday at 2 AM. Bought some small pieces of wood in Costa Rica. Spent Saturday doing this box first in cheap pine (3 attempts, 0 successes), Sunday trying again (3 attempts, 1 success), and today using the CR woods. One attempt - SUCCESS!

Pinned lid with Cortezza, Purple Heart, Iron Wood, and ??? (the blond wood at the front - shoot! - don't recall the name!). Base from Cocobolo.

The top was the PITA, but finally got it right.

Wanted to take it to work for my desk. LOML stole it! But, that's OK!

        Wow!

I've decided to stop building prototypes out of construction lumber. It moves too much and is hard to work with for that reason.

Very nice results, Paul. I know what you mean with the lid. The first time you do a hidden pin.. it is a PITA determining exactly where the pin hole should be located so your proto-types should have been an advantage there. And matching those colors in the lid was no minor task either.

            Good job...

Yep, prototypes made a world of difference! I had a great set of plans, but getting the pins right (as well as getting the curved pieces right) was a challenge!

Where does one buy wood in Costa Rica? How'd you locate the place? Significant bargains? Unique woods available?

Beautiful, Paul! I like the off-setting colors in the top and the 'random' pattern.

In Sarchi. BIG "souvenir" place, sold small batches of wood. Sarchi is "famous" for building "the world's largest ox cart' (in Guiness no less)

Bargains? I have no idea, compared to cost here. Just bought what I liked. Unique woods? Whatever is available in Costa Rica!!!

Thanks, Pappy! Have to confess - LOML suggested the top pattern. That's why she took the box! (and part of the reason it was a PITA to make!).

That is nice looking and well done. Can you do incisions that pretty? Or is that to hold medicine?

Uh, "incisions"? I guess you mean the pattern on the top. And, no. Thus several prototypes in pine! I am NOT a bandsaw expert! Finally got it right!

When LOML and I got home we put the wood samples together. She suggested the color match AND the pattern. (Me? Green and purple look OK to me, as do straight lines.) Took one look and said OK - looked good! Then tried and tried and tried .....

I was going to take it to work. Probably to hold paper clips. LOML will probably use it for something else. Oh well. At least she is happy!

                              Paul,

That box looks beautiful. How did you get the lid pieces to fit so perfectly? And, did you do the groove in the front before or after assembly?
