Never ending bunk beds finally finished

I have had so much travel recently that these beds (which were supposed to be finished by Christmas) finally made it out of my living room last week. The room these were slated for has an unusually low roof so typically taller head boards wouldn't work. All of the head/foot boards are right at 30" tall. The legs are just a tad over 2" square and except for the 3/4" slates, most of the stock was either 1 1/4" with 1 1/2" for the rails. The picture of the bed installed is fuzzy at best since it was taken with a cell phone.

That's a nice piece of work, Mike. As a kid, I always thought bunk beds would be cool. Then I got my own room and that was even better.

great job! I take it they are the type that can come apart to have two separate beds?

They can be two singles. I used 3" long 1/2" stainless steel to mount the upper.

Those look really good, Mike. I really like the non-movable ladder. The kids should be happy campers now.

Very nice -- they're gonna love it!

I think my next project is going to be a loft bed for the 14 y.o., but I already know it's not gonna look that good!

            Regards,
            Tom

Look great and are a bit more eloquent than the metal ones with wire springs I had to sleep on in the 60's while in the military. Sure you don't won't to paint them olive green?

              Great build...

It would have to be haze grey in my case if they were going to be painted. The only problem I had with this project was the rails all came out of a slab that was a little 22" wide and 10/4 stock. The only way I could manage the first cut was a long blade on my jigsaw and then could get it on the band saw. No matter what I tried, I just don't have enough oomph to handle wood that heavy.

                  Very Cool

                  The beds came out spectacular.

I'd say that was a project worth the wait! I loved bunk beds as a kid and so did my boys.

Really nice, Mike. The kids are going to love them. My girls loved theirs and now their kids love 'em when they stay over. Bunks are kind of timeless and universally appreciated - well, by most men, at least.
                      Blessings,

Thanks for all the comments but one thing I discovered early on was that my shop isn't geared to working with stock that size. It will likely be the last project of that type unless I win the lottery and move to a bigger shop.

Did you do these from a set of plans? or design on your own? My wife is talking bunk beds now and I like what you did.
