With the help of your suggestions on my last post I redesigned the base for these.I used 1 1/2" syp for the base and stretcher, added a gentle curve to the outside, and made it as wide as the seat.My friends said the size of the other is perfect.I like it much better than the old design. Thanks for your help.

I think it looks more in proportion. Especially the thicker material for the base; it looks right now. Another option to the shape of the base would be rather than curving the top back out, just carry it up straight. I'd have to sketch it to see whether it adds anything visually.
What you have now with the current design looks really good. -
I went back and looked at the old pictures, and though it sounded like your changes were minor, they really made a difference. While this design looks much more sturdy, I think the curves on the vertical pieces make it look more elegant. That's not an easy combination to achieve -- good job!

I think we came up with a nice design as well. The only thing I really mulled over was making the curve a little deeper on the side.I never did draw it out because I wanted to keep it symetrical with the curve of the seat.I think it would've distracted the eye.
I should have posted the old design for comparison, but I was in a rush yesterday.I think it was a vast improvement.I think therefore I .....awwww where is that remote.Comment

Thank you all for your kind words. I decided to put the slats against the long grain for glue strength. I think I may build the next with the grain vertically. I had a little tear out on the round overs on the sides. My freinds kids love the other to sit on and play video games. They said it is very comfortable.Last edited by drillman88; 02-26-2009, 09:48 PM.I think therefore I .....awwww where is that remote.Comment

Wow...I *like* it! A lot! I'm thinking of making something "similar", to keep in the family room (and for sitting directly in front of the fireplace sometimes... My wife like to make S'Mores, sometimes..
I have a question - Please don't take this as a criticism! I like the bench the way you made it...She'd like it a little better *without* the gaps between the slats. (I like the gaps. Oh well). Is there an easy way to fit them "flush" to each other, or do I have to grab a plane and hand fit each slat? Doable, of course, but I'd hate to do all that work and have someone with more experience ask "Why didn't ya just...?" You know what I mean!
Any ideas?
BTW....I kind of like the horizontal grain on the supports... But I digress.

Sawdog,
I try not to take any ideas others have as criticism.I think of it as a chance to exchange view points and ideas to make each other better people, maybe grow a little.
I think it would be possible but the slats have a little give in them that may cause some problems. You would need to make them wider obviously, but maybe thicker as well to reduce the give, that may take away from the comfort a little bit.
Others may have suggestions for fitting the boards easier than a plane but I think each one would need to be fitted to the curve and the slat next to it.You could narrow the gap to 1/16" or so and it would be much easier.
btw thank you for the complimentLast edited by drillman88; 02-28-2009, 12:15 PM.I think therefore I .....awwww where is that remote.Comment
