The "Crib" is finished and ready for delivery ...

... and the new Grand Baby will be delivered shortly as well ...

Well ... after what seems like an eternity ... the "crib" part of this project is finished and will be delivered to it's new home next week ... I still have the rail for the "toddler bed" and the footboard for the "full bed" to make but those aren't under the time crunch the crib portion was. So .... deep breath ... hold ... exhale slowly ... again ... ahhhhhhhhhhh ....

The pictures in the following link show the finished crib in both it's "undressed" and "dressed" states ... the "dressed" state shown is using "store bought" accoutrement's vs the beautiful handmade quilts and blankets from grandmothers, great-grandmothers and friends with which it will be ultimately adorned.

For the interested woodworkers viewing, I used this crib plan from Rockler and then modified it substantially to suit my particular taste. The wood is rift sawn white oak I bought from the M & G Sawmill (well worth the trip and great guys to deal with), the finish is MinWax antique Oak gel and a topcoat (several) of hand wiped satin oil based poly.

So the photo's are at the following link (a Picasa web album) you should be able to view ... Link to crib web album

I got to buy SEVERAL new tools for this build including a new Grizzly SL1023 table saw since I burned up the motor on my BT3100 on the first rip of the 4/4 white oak. I also managed to finagle a Dowelmax jig (awesome craftsmanship on this tool!) so all in all winners all round!

I'm really very happy with the results of the crib ... the plan was pretty easy to read and understand, it gave me LOTS of mortise/tenon experience which I really need for future projects I have in mind and the mother-to-be is thrilled so I can't ask for much more satisfaction than that ... it's a good day ...

      "Yellow clamps" ...

You had me puzzled for a bit ... I was concentrating on the finished product and was freaking out about what clamps you were seeing ... then I realized you had scrolled thru the pics to where I had dry clamped the crib ... those are nothing more than cam clamps that I use in guitar/mandolin building for the most part but got sprayed with screaming canary yellow paint on some project years ago ... they are actually these => cam clamps from StewMac bought long long ago ...

Of course I looked at all you pics, its nice to see how something comes together from raw stock to the finished project.

Funny about the clamps. I have seen those wooden ones before but as your are bright yellow I thought they were metal.

Very nice job, Bade. Ahhhh.. how long before he or she learns to scale the fence and make the "great escape". Our son kept getting his leg hung between slats. He finally made it over one day. I considered putting concentina wire around the top but for some reason my wife vetoed the idea. You know how women are..

Great job - the finish is absolutely a marvel!

So - which joins were M&T and which were dowels?

The only dowel joins were the headboard legs ...

... 20 dowels (5 top & 5 bottom on each leg) , 40 holes perfectly aligned with the Dowelmax ... a tool that is a pleasure to use (you just have to decide if you are willing to pay the price ...)

Good job Bade! How much sanding did it take to get the blade burn off the side of some of the slats? (nice tool gloat, too....thought no one would catch you?)
