Scratch one off the list (finally!)

Back in September I asked for some help in designing a new railing for a half wall on our staircase (http://www.bt3central.com/showthread.php?t=40524).

Here's the final result, done with QSWO and walnut trim. Despite some problems I think it turned out pretty well and LOML is very happy with the result. I think my biggest complaint is that it took me 3-4 months to do something as simple as this.

Overall there weren't too many gotcha. You can see one in the pics; of course the one mortise that had some tearout was the one that is most visible .

Thanks for looking and all the support!

Beautiful job. The oak really looks good on top of the half wall and the walnut adds a nice contrast.

You did a great job and now have the satisfaction of saying "I built that!"

It takes those of us who are hobbyists a long time because we don't do it every day and we can't spend all of the limited amounts of time we have available on this one project. I spent a long time just building some shop drawers, in part because it takes me a while to figure out the correct sequence of machining steps and in part because each setup takes me longer than it would take a pro.

Great job, love the color. Did you fume it to get that color or did you stain it?

Thanks for all the very kind comments. Even with the flaws that I know are there, I am happy with how it turned out. I have to give credit to fellow BT3 member Pelligrini who suggested the plugs, although I opted to make them flush instead of raised.

Chopnhack, I didn't use stain or fuming. The finish is BLO, followed by a layer of dewaxed shellac and finally a number of coats of Arm-R-Seal. The only fancy thing I did was to use some walnut dye on the walnut trim to increase the contrast.

Omar, I can't take credit for the floating shelves. LOML picked them up (somewhere) and mounted them herself. She got tired of waiting for me to build her a display cabinet for her dragon collection, so she took matters into her own hands.

Once again, I have to thank everyone here for their support. This IS the best forum on the net and I feel privledged to be a member.
