    Cutting Board for LOML...

As Christmas approached, I had nothing for my wife, and lacked ideas, I ended up getting her a Garmin (she kept stealing mine, now I may steal her's, it's nicer), and making her one of these....

My first attempt at one, fairly happy with the results. It's Cherry, Walnut, Hard Maple, and Purpleheart. Not yet oiled, have to go pick up some. It took about 3 hours, so not too bad.

I may make her a larger one as well, but she seemed happy with this size, and recycled one of her older ones when I gave it to her.

Looks good Keith. Is it all glued or did you do something else to join the sections? What glue did you use?

          Bad... bad... boy!

It turned out excellent, Keith. Most cutting boards I see posted actually turn out looking like art-work and you didn't miss that mark.

Thanks guys! It's just glued together, note the 3 hour project time . I used titebond II for it, should be fine given the use of the board. My wife and I are still discussing what we might use for the finish, probably some General Finishes salad bowl finish, unless anyone has had bad luck with it.

Sarge, considering that she got me a PS3 this year, I'm glad I got it done!

I have been thinking about these for Mothers day gifts. All the women in my life enjoy cooking so these will work out well.

"still discussing what we might use for the finish, probably some General Finishes salad bowl finish, unless anyone has had bad luck with it"... Keith

I just used Behlan's Salad Bowl Finish on 4 kitchen knife set holders made with maple for Xmas gifts, Keith. Very easy to apply with a cloth and virtually no bubbling using the bacic padding technique I use applying shellac. The finish from them is has been thinned considerably.

It left a notch below gloss on those which was really what I wanted and once it drys throughly it is food safe. But.. if you want to avoid a glossy finish on a cutting board as I would consider, you might go with butcher block finish whiich is also food safe. But... more dry time is necessary before use to allow the deep sinking oils to cure properly before use.

PS3 huh... our budget is so tight with utily and grocery price increases I got a 1/4" 6 tpi BS blade and a pack of wooden finger-nails to get in tight spots. She was going to get me a pair of new shoes also but... I opted to just wrap duct tape around the holes in the toes of the ones I have so I could get a bottle of new glue also.

                  Regards...

Nice Keith, but I think your next project is to fashion some shoes for sarge, we cant have him going around bare toed! Post some photos with the finish applied when you can.
