Salad Bowl - No turning required

After Thanksgiving dinner LOML said she had been thinking (not a good sign) and she wanted a new large salad bowl in time for a party we are having. She described what she wanted and used the word "funky" to describe it.

The base is 8"sq and its 22" wide at its widest. Its made out of various contrasting pieces of walnut, including various pieces that had sapwood. LOML liked this especially where there was a mixture in the same piece.

The compound angles and miters gave me some heartache and for those of you with a good eye you will notice it isnt perfectly sq -kinda adds to the funkyness dont ya think...

That's a nice bowl, Jon - and if its a hit with LOYL, you've done it right . But I admit to being at a loss as how to tell it's not square, given those edges that follow the grain - so unless someone pulls out their pocket-square at dinner, I don't think anyone else will notice either.

Cool bowl, Jon. The grain on the piece to the right really caught my eye.

                Thanks guys.

Larry, its finished with a butcher block/salad bowl conditioner, a mixture of mineral oil, beeswax and carnuba wax. its easy and a pleasure to apply, you can virtually hear the wood sucking it up. I was going to make my own as I have plenty of mineral oil but the cost of a lump of beeswax was 3 times the cost of this bottle from rockler.

I agree and I learned a new technique for cutting compound angles from an old FWW article.

There are lots of interesting grain oddities. On the back piece there are these diagonal streaks that run through the grain, not sure what causes these but they look cool. The colors do match more closely in natural light but the photo lighting didnt hit everthing evenly.

Great piece of work and quickly done to. That was Thanksgiving this year wasn't it?

I too like the way the walnut works. Bet she will be asking for a set of matching utensils to go with it now.

Somewhere there is a chart that gives your the angles to set the saw at for making those cuts. I had one and lost it... if anyone knows of one online I know that I for one would appreciate a copy.

Yup it was TG this year. I actually finished it a week ago but i was too busy to take pics until today.

You must have been talking to LOML as she has already asked for the utensils No chance for a couple of weeks as I have too much on for the next week.

I started out doing this with a chart but found a FWW article that showed a way to do it without having to measure angles. I will find the link and post it but you may have to bea FWW member to see it.

Here is the link to the article on "compound angles without the math."

You may need to be a FWW online member to view it.

                              Very Cool

A really neat bowl er, box er I know salad serving dish! Yeah that is it a salad serving dish. I really like it and may have to steal the idea. So I might want a set of the working drawings.

Or could you post a picture of the bottom so I can guess at the construction.

                              Thanks! Again Very Very Cool
