OK I will put you out of your misery.
Yes it is for a router. The slot in the front plate registers onto the flat sides of the spindle and then you can change bits with only one wrench - Yeehaa!
No more wrestling with two wrenches and the jig holds the router nice and steady

I wish it was my idea but alas no. It came from this book, which I borrowed from the library and thought it was one of the best of its type I have seen so I just ordered my own copy.

The jig really is a great idea. I hope it will serve you well for a long time.
The problem I have with these kind of jigs is finding a place where they are readily accessible and convenient to use. But you have a much neater shop than I.Often in error - Never in doubt

Do you mean guessing how to make it? Its pretty much like it looks. SOme scrap plywood made to fit the specifc dimensions of your router. The joinery is highly complex i.e. glue and brads So I would imagine the guessing game has just started. And the only way to ruin the game is to beg, barrow or steal the book.
The jig really is a great idea. I hope it will serve you well for a long time.

That book is one of the absorbing/interesting I've read on ww-ing. As much as Hylton's router books are.
There are many similar, simple but effective jigs in it.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.
