    Simply.. A Coffee Table

To meet the demands of abuse at family gatherings by small children who are allowed to use the piece as a work-bench... armed with crayons.. glue.. scissors and a host of other offenders. There are no "Do Not Touch" signs as guest are made to feel as if they never left the comfort of their own home.

She looked at many but kept coming back to Mission even though I have never done a Mission yet. Forty five minutes spent on a crude sketch with cut list. 45 board feet of QS white oak brought home to acclimate with a plan in mind. Simple design with function.. quality materials and construted in a "right-ful manner" using joinery in lieu of today's trend of metal fasteners.

The plan began execution Oct. 1 working 4 hour week-days as one must observe the season of the "pig-skin" which is sacred down south. I have completed a bed.. two chest of drawers and an entertain-ment cabinet since last Oct. 22nd. I would take my time on this one as it was like being allowed to lick the frosting spoon before the frosting saw the cake compared to those.

27 working hours saw dry fit of joints.. scrape.. sand and tenon tape-up. 3 additional hours of finishing with 8 hour cure times between coats and a two week final cure before Renaissance Wax which saw an additional 2 days cure.

The piece was put into use Oct. 26 with hopes that the above criteria was meet. Time is the real test as on the surface it appears the results of 30 hours of labor I love is:

    Simply.. a coffee table!

Sweet table! I love the look of Mission furniture. Maybe it's the QSWO that really sets it apart.

Thanks guys as I did not even get off the site before you replied. By accident I discovered something a computer illiterate (pretty much carries over to everything else, really ) that by placing your pointer on a picture here and clicking on it.. it changes the existing picture to an even more enhanced picture. Daaaa.....

Gotta run for now as the new CT was delivered yesterday and a "new order" came down from command HQ this morning for: Simply.. a computer desk and cabinet. She has no respect but.. she is cute and seems to get what she wants somehow?

The mortises are a piece of cake these days, J R... Over 40 of them with the slats and about 2 hours taking my time.

Great job on the table. It should hold up well.
Ive finally got Loml liking mission and arts and crafts style furniture, but she wont budge on darker colors somewhere betwwen colonial oak and cherry is her preference.
The natural look of yours is perfect for the piece.

Drillman - most of what I make is Mission style and my lumber of choice is cherry.

                          Beautiful table SARGE

Even if you wouldn't mention that it's White Oak, I would know it immediately but.....that's the only wood (except Pine of course) that I can identify...

Looks like the new table saw is working in "full steam"...

40 mortises in 2 hours ?....well, with my "machinery" it would take 2 full working days...or more

Oh, and if you right click on the picture and select "Open in New Tab" it will open faster and on white background (I don't like the dark background).

                          Regards
                          niki
