    Recent Projects

The first project I think I have posted before. It is a new kitchen island of cherry, baltic birch plywood (drawer sides and back and interior frame), and cherry covered mdf (panels). I am posting it again because we got the solid granite top.

The other two projects are an entertainment center and a kitchen table for my son. He is a teacher who doesn't make much so I am making him a few pieces so he has something decent. Both these projects are based upon plans from Woodsmith. I changed a few things in each, however.

Awesome work, Jim! I wish I could accomplish half as much as you did. Thank you for sharing!

    Kind regards,
    Chris

Very nice work JimD, really like the figure on the island.

Did you do anything specific to handle the wires/cables that seem to grow into 'nests' for the entertainment center?

From looking at the image with the table -- looks like some chairs may be in the future project list?

Beautiful project, all, Jim. The dark granite top accentuates the figure in the drawer fronts!

          Stan,

The plans from Woodsmith, which were available for free when I downloaded them, have you inset the back a couple inches for wires. I missed that and did not like the approach anyway so I put a cutout in the center divider about an inch deep and similar cutouts at the back of each shelf so the wires could be routed inside. My son says this worked fine for the signal wires but he has the power cords going out the ventilation slots in the back to the power center/protector. So there is at least a partial nest in the back. If I had followed the plans well, there would be a bigger nest but also more room for it. I think keeping as much of the mess as possible inside the cabinet makes sense. The cabinet is almost 24 inches deep and you only need about 18 for electronics so there is space for wiring.

Chairs are the next project. We have four other chairs I made in our kitchen but these are a bit different. We'll see how that goes. I still have some 5/4 oak to get started with.

          Jim

Nice work. I like the table a lot. Tables are my favorite thing to build. I love the simple lines. It should make you happy to know that someone somewhere will be using that 100 years from now.

                  Very Cool

I am sure your son appreciates the furniture. It might take him some time to really appreciate the quality you have built into the furniture.

I love cherry and the island is great.

I like the entertainment center, nice work. I have one of these on my todo list but its way down the list at the moment.

                          Chiz,

I have but it has been awhile. I posted the island the first time in May, something in April, something in February and a few all the way back to 2003. I've made a lot more than I've posted but I have posted a few projects previously.

After re-reading your opening sentence I realize that I misunderstood - apologies. Geez, what a day. That's the second time that has happened *today*. I need to slow down and get my head out of... well, never mind.
