    Laundry Sorter

Finished this at the same time I painted the cabinets for the Playpen but hadn't remembered to post it. Not exactly what would be called fine woodworking, but it serves its purpose.

We had 3 laundry baskets, a 3 compartment hanging sorter, and another bag type laundry cart in 3 rooms. The dirty clothes in the bedroom basket never seemed to get sorted until the pile was huge. I came up with the idea of a single unit with 6 bins that would comfortably hold a washer washer load each. Dirty clothes get taken to the laundry room every couple of days and sorted. When a bin is to the top of the door, we have a load.

Construction is rail and stile panels from Poplar with plastic lattice inserts, including the horizontal sections. The panels are joined with rabet and dado joinery. 'H' type hinges were used with magnetic catches located behind the white porcelan knobs. The unit rides on casters so it can be easily moved.

I am going to have to reverse the doors on the right end. Where it is sitting there isn't enough room to open them more than a few inches.

    Looks like a cool idea.
Ok if I steal the idea?

nice! that is a great idea especially when you have the room to do so. i see its on wheels.

now all you have to design is a portable chute so when you open the door, everything goes sliding into the laundry

Pretty good idea, Don. How did you prevent shattering when you cut the lattice? I don't know if the plastic rendition reacts like the wooden one does but my experience with the latter and a circular saw was pretty chancy, although I did get it done with a few failures.

Great idea and thanks for sharing. I am another who would like to use your idea. I only need three bins though, hers, mine and the dogs.

Thanks for the kind words, gents.

Chiz, 'plastic' is a loose term. The stuff is a soft poly compound of some type and cut easily on the BT.

Help your selves to the idea. If I haven't erased them, I will get a pic of the plans and put it up with the basic dimensions I used.

Very nice work Pappy. My wife saw this and wants one. But I gotta ask, what is wrong with the bedroom floor for clothes? In my batchelor days I had two piles on my bedroom floor (at least for the knockaround stuff). One pile was dirty clothes and one was the clean ones.

After checking with my lovely I now understand what "sorting" laundry is.... as my method of one pile keeps life simple would not require but one door. With that information in mind that is a very clever idea. Very.. very.. clever indeed....

Well, isn't that just typical of Don - Airing his dirty laundry in public again...

Cool idea. I my have to think about doing something similar. However, I'll need to bump out a few walls to make it about 48 slots to hold all of the loads of dirty laundry currently in our house!! I assume the laundry pile decreases again when the kids move out?
