    Japanese Box of Drawers

Found the plans for this on the Internet then naturally made a few changes.

It is made using oak, there are 44 motrise and tennon joints, the drawers are dovetailed. It is held together by the motrise and tennon joints they are not glued. The finish is spray on schelac. It is 18 1/4" high, 15 1/2" wide and 12" deep.

Wow John, just wow! That's excellent work. Was the choice of shellac as the finish due to the tradition of the piece? Or some other personal choice?

    Excellent work.

      Excellent work.
To tell the truth I had this can sitting on the shelf and thought I would use it to seal the wood then apply wipe on poly over it but I was so happy with the way the it came out I did not bother with the polly. I also loved the way a coat is dry to the touch in about 10 minutes!

Really clever project. Nicely done. Must have been very time consuming. Does this piece have a particular history? What will you use it for?

My reaction is pretty much the same as drumpriest's. I think it's just one of those pieces where, the first time you see it, the word that pops in your head is, "Wow."

Really impressive work, John. What will it be for?

44 mortise and tennon joints = 44 mortise pins. Have you had these masochistic tendencies for long?????

                Beautiful piece, John!

Ok, this where I go off and cry for a while, and shake my fist at the world for making me come into work every day.
