Help With Red Cedar Chair Finish

I built these two chairs 6 years ago and I cleaned and refinished with the original Penofin Ultra two years ago. Well its time to refinish again and I would like some suggestions this time around. I just got done using a cleaner/wood brightener and I'm thinking that knocking done the raised grain with 220+ before using the Penofin should achieve a uniform finish. Two years ago I just washed and refinished and the end result was a bit to dark, the Penofin is a transparent cedar shade so thats what I'm shooting for. The web sites for the wash and the finish are not to DIY friendly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Simple maintenance could be just a clean up with a Scotchbrite pad, and a mild soap solution, and for a finish use 100% pure tung oil. Penofin contains solvents, and is expensive. I would not use steel wool, as particles will rust. If you need a wool, use bronze wool, or a composite non metallic fibered wool.

This was my first small project when I was just getting into woodworking. At the time all I had was a drill and a router so I choose this source,http://www.woodnewengland.com/Furniturekits.htm

Thanks Mike, their website seems to be in disrepair at the moment

            Pointer to "Jake's Chair"

Hijacking the thread just a bit but for Paulstenlund ... I built this chair a couple of years ago ... a very good chair with very detailed plans at the site linked here ...

            http://www.internetwoodworking.com/w5/chair.html

If you really want to build from scratch this is a good one!

              thanks Bade

I have the info for Jakes chair, I thought I might start with one a bit simpler. Our engineer can enlarge the templates on the plotter that would simplify things a bit. Do you have any hints or tips on construction.

              Thanks again for your help

I just dove in head first ...

... it really wasn't hard to build ... I did find a site on the net that had some pictures of construction ...

                http://www.woodshopdemos.com/adirk-1.htm

and I did find that helpful ... but basically I just drew up the templates full size and then made fiberboard versions of the templates and went to work ... there are a lot of pieces parts but none of it was over taxing ....

I used my table saw, my band saw and router all for various phases of the build.

                Good luck!

btw .. it's a GREAT chair once finished!
