My first shop cabinet based on the book by Tom Clark: “Practical Shop Cabinets”.
I must be bloody slow though, it took me 70 plus hours to complete it.
I used ¾” (actually more like 11/16”) paint-grade birch plywood(that’s what the lumberyard called it) for both the cabinet and the drawer boxes. Cheap, about $40Can. per sheet. Doorskin material, 5.5mm Mersawa plywood, was used for the drawer bottoms. I had some old ¼” wall panel material, which I used for the cabinet’s back.
The drawer boxes were installed so that the fronts were set back about 1/16” from the front surface of the cabinet, I then used 9mm(about 3/8”) Baltic birch plywood for the drawer fronts
I wiped on 2 coats of MinWax waterbased polycrylic with a light sanding between coats.
Total cost for all material $309Can.
Here are some pictures of the cabinet and some stages of construction:
Completed cabinet:
A little jig made from MDF helps to keep the drawer slide aligned to the plywood runner:
Installing the drawer slides/runners to the cabinet sides and centre bulkheads. I used my cutting guide to align the runners:
Basic cabinet completed:
All drawer components:
Drawer boxes assembled:
Before the install of the drawer fonts and the cabinet top:
Thanks for looking. Comments, questions always welcome.
