Arts and Crafts Hall Table - Pics

Hello,

I just finished my Arts and Crafts hall table. It is done in quarter sawn white oak, with maple draw runners and drawers.

Assembly is mortise and tenon, with biscuits holding the internal drawer runner system in place.

Finish is 3 coats of "tung oil" ( I think its Johnson's Tung Oil Finish) rubbed down with steel wool after each.

The design is of course very derivative, although I did the design myself in sketch up.

What a beauty! An instant heirloom. I've never seen that "crosshatch" treatment on the spindles before. It's a very creative addition the Arts and Crafts tradition.

Ya done good with your design. Custom designs are harder than store-bought plans, but you have the pride of knowing that every element is yours -- plus you hall table is exactly right for you and better than any bought plan.

The devil is in you details, and that's where your piece shines.
> Chamfered lower edge of the top ... glad you added it. Wasn't on your SketchUp plan.
> End grain of top looks good. Hard to prep and finish to match long grain of edges and top.
> Graduated horizontal bars on the ends. Must have been a bear to make and fit. EDIT - I see now that they are not individual pieces. see below.
> Through tenons on the horizontal bars. EDIT - error, see next bullet.
> EDIT - I just noticed, the horizontal bars are half-lapped, and are recessed on the outside and proud on the inside. I like that even better than my first impression. Another plus!
> Nice reveal on leg/apron and leg/lower rail.
> Good fit on the drawers.
> Steel ball bearing drawer runners would have destroyed the A&C look. Your wood runners and kickers are perfect for the piece.
> Good period hardware.
> Nice gentle curve on lower rails.

++ How old is your house? I really like the base cap and the heating vent. Nice floors, too. Your hall table "belongs" in the house.

OK - you asked ... One minor critique: usually, but not written in stone, the dovetail on the drawer front starts with a 1/2 pin instead of a 1/2 tail. But you did a superior job on the DT's. The fit and color contrast between front and sides is clean and crisp.

Looks really nice. A job well done. The figure in the wood comes out nice with the tung oil. One question....Are there any plans for a top coat over the oil..( or have you already)?

Very very nicely done and I agree it matches the character of the house from what we can see in the pictures.

Between the diagram and the finished product I do like the tapered feet in the diagram but the straight legs match well with the crosshatching too.

My house was built in 1929. The floors are maple and were recently refinished (by the previous owner). There are all kinds of figured maple pieces scattered in.

I do like the tapered feet in the diagram

I did to, but I decided to veneer two faces of each leg to get quarter sawn figure all around. When I did a taper, this ended up not looking too great, so I just omitted that from the final version.

One question....Are there any plans for a top coat over the oil?

No, I figure the Tung Oil mixture I used has some varnish built in. Plus, the table will be very light use, and really doesn't need more protection.

How much time did you take to create the sketchup diagram?

And how much time did take for the wood version?

Great looking table! It even looks like the plan. I start from plans, but usually modify the design as I go so any resemblence to the plan is an accident.
