Hi all, I have been working on this project for quite some time. It is a commission piece wine rack with a cabinet, wine glass holder, and a shelf for some knick knacks.
The cabinet portion if cherry veneer plywood edge banded with 1/8" cherry strips. The top is cherry ply wrapped in a 1" wide mitered cherry frame. The rest of the project is solid cherry but for the marquetry panel, with the legs being curly cherry. The wine bottle holders were template routed to be identical, the top 2 hold 8 regular wine bottles, the bottom 2 hold 6 magnum bottles. The wine glass holder under the top shelf holds 12 wine glasses, and was purchased at amazon for 9$. The side rails where the bottles go are also curved via template routing.
The cabinet is joined to the legs with biscuits, the wine bottle holders and side rails are mortise and loose tenon, and the top is attached with dowels. The door is mortise and loose tenon with dados routed to hold the panel. I used a non mortise hinge, and 2 barrel magnetic catches help keep the door closed with the strikers mortised into the back of the door.
The marquetry is cut from shop sawn veneers including curly maple as the background, purple heart for the grapes, and green poplar for the leaves. These pieces were sand shaded to add depth. There was an inclusion in the maple, and I extended this dark defect via wood burning for the branch.
Here was the rendering that got approved... warning, it's a large rendering.

And here are a couple of photos of the results. I will take more photos in the daylight tomorrow for better views.

Needless to say, this one took quite some time, was delayed by several tool upgrades during production, and the arrival of Harrison. I am very glad to finally have it finished for the client, they have been very patient. I do warn people when I take on projects such as these that it will be at my own pace, but I never imagined this one taking so long. Let me know what you all think please....
