    Doll Bed for Shanna

Awhile back, my grandaughter, Shanna and her mommy called me and asked if I could make a doll house. I said sure, thinking it would be sized for Shanna's "Polly Pockets" dolls (small). I was then informed the house was for Shanna's American Girl dolls. These are about 18" tall! Whan I told my daughter how big a house for them would be, we decided on a bed instead!

About the same time, forum member Offthemark, posted a doll bed he built sized for the American Girl dolls. I showed it to Shanna and she loved it. A quick PM to Mark (thank you!!) and I had the dimensions he used and some construction details. I told Shanna I would make her one just like it. It was then that I was informed that she had THREE dolls, not two and they all needed a bed. Trying the explain the concept of "hot-bunking" just didn't work so I had to modify Mark's original , single bed with trundle design to a bunk bed with trundle.

My original plan was to use walnut, but all the stock at the lumber store looked pretty nasty. That's when I found the black limba. Wow, what a nice wood to work with! The hardest thing about it was deciding which face was the best looking on all the parts.

The finished bed is 23 1/4"x14"x20" and the trundle is 19 5/8"x12 1/2"x3". The main bunk bed is joined using tenon & mortise while the trundle is butt joints with biscuits. Finish is six coats of wiped on poly over the topsides and 5 coats on the undersides.

Belinda made the mattresses and is finishing up custom-made-for-each-doll blankets that have the doll's name embroidered on them.

Next step is getting it packaged and shipped!

I like it very much, IR. And whoever's design... that one will stand up to a "Tiger Tank", so.... can we say "child-proof" expecially for the gentler of the species.

Hey, I'm a rotor head, not a planker (helo pilot term for airplanes) and when Shanna decides it time to play with dolls, I play with dolls!!!!! MUCH easier than telling her no.

I was surprised at the cost, about $6.75 a board foot. When I saw it in the rack, it looked so good I just knew it had to be REAL expensive. As a comparison, the mahognay I looked at (really, really nice) was about $13 a board foot. I was all set to get the mahogany and just for "giggles" I decided to ask about the limba. When I got the price, it went straight to the counter, no more questions asked.

It is really nice to work with; routes, cuts and sands with out any drama. Like I said in the starter, the hardest part was deciding which side would face outwards.

I had hoped to have enough pieces left over to try a small bandsaw box, but I cut the material pretty fine so that will have to wait until another day.

Sarge, I do tend to "over build" (I remember how I was as a kid), but this way it has a chance to handed-down.

Thanks for the kind words fellows, I appreciate them.

That is beautiful Larry. If my grandaughters see it I will be building a couple.

The bed arrived safely in Chicago on Friday. My daughter said it took her 20 minutes to cut through all the tape and bubble wrap (Belinda did a REAL good job packing it up). Shanna called me later that afternoon after she got home from from pre-K to tell me how much she liked and ho much her dolls liked it.
She then told me that my design had a seriuos fault; no ladder for the dolls to get into the upper bunk! I swear that child has a 35 year old brain trapped in a 5 year old body!!!!

I told her daddy he could get MAJOR "dad-points" by going to PetSmart and getting a bird cage ladder the right size and telling Shanna he made it for her.
