I posted for ideas a while back and finally came up with this. Most of what I saw on the web was pretty boring and I wanted to be a bit different. This is the third one that was ordered and I still have 4 to do so it appears the recipients like them. This one is Rosewood for the frame and cherry for the 5 tiers. The final finish with be General Finishes varnish. I used a beading bit on the tier edges to give it more depth that looks rather busy in the pics but looks good close up.

It's a military tradition going back to World War I. Most commands have coins and a lot of people collect them so they need a place to get parked.
When you went into a club.... other members of the service would "challenge" you. If you didn't have a coin, you bought the round.

The Marine emblem was a little over 12 minutes and the flag was around 14 1/2 minutes. For the folks that make projects for sale, this one seems to be pretty popular as I have 4 more to do. Kind of takes the challenge out of it doing the same thing over and over.Comment

That is really nice. Glad you gave the explanation for what the coins are.
If you want to "expand" your line bit, may I suggest modifing your design a bit and make domino racks.Larry R. Rogers

Rack looks super. I've got a friend who's been thinking about adding the carver to his custom WW shop.
23 years in the Navy and 71-94 and I'd never heard or seen anything like a challenge coin. PatWoodworking is therapy.....some of us need more therapy than others. <ZERO>Comment

Similar here only '69-95. I never ran into any of them till I started to do some installations at Marine bases. It's a pretty big thing with them (fortunately for me

I don't know about the USMC but they became popular in the USAF about 8 years ago. I was in the USAF for 5 years before I saw one but I was in a non-combat unit at that time.Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. - Thomas EdisonComment
