Plate Rail in the Dining Room

Well, I am finally about 90% done with the "plate rail" in my dining room. It is a project that I have wanted to do for years now. I removed all existing molding in the room and went with 1 x 4, and routed a simple bead on one edge.

For those that are unfamiliar, a plate rail used to be used to store plates in homes that had no cabinets. The rail would be set high to keep the plates safe.

I still need to add the actual shelf that would hold the plates (in our case family photos), but my wife and I are still debating about which molding to use on the underside, the kitchen is a shaker style cabinet so we are reluctant to go with anything too fancy.

With any luck, these photo uploads will work. Thanks in advance for taking a peek.

Awesome Lee! GJ on the walls! Now with that wonderful tray ceiling, where is the crown?

    I love mine, here's a pic

Beautiful room Lee as is the upper walls and ceiling chopnhack posted. The first plate rail I ever saw or even heard of was in 1973 in a former mother-in-law's home. She had the rack filled with collectible Holly Hobby plates, at least it was Holly something?

Enjoy your dining room as it appears larger than the entire house I grew up in after my father passed in 1959 when I was 12 years old. Beautiful floors also.

Wow that is nice. Not showing this to my wife or else I will have another project.

That looks great. I know how hard it is to get trim to look good, and I think that looks superb. And I like the colors, too. I like everything about the room.
