Another Bandsaw Box

[Stan]

Another of the Aurora boxes from the book by Lois Ventura. This one went to Decatur, GA. Black Walnut and Ash laminations, Ash pulls. Finish is Sherwood Moisture Resistant Lacquer (Medium Rubbed).

Just give it a quick rubdown with a sanding sponge, the lacquer self levels pretty good all by itself.

The pulls if sanded thinner and shaped more might look better but then again maybe you wanted them this way, but in any event go back to Lois’s book and study her pulls and see what you think.

Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner (to assure you that I am in absolutely no way offended), but I was going to look through the book at the pulls -- and then forgot where I put my remaining brain cell and never got to it.

That is one of the aspects of the bandsaw boxes that does leave me grasping for something better. I planed the stock for the pulls to 1/2" and shaped them on the spindle sander. At one point I was almost at the decision to look for some small brass pulls to put on bandsaw boxes...

One thing I have done in the past that I like better than the type of pulls used in the box displayed at the beginning of this thread, is to use a scroll saw and make a smaller replica of the overall box (although that would not have worked on the box displayed in this thread). Some examples:

Stan I like your two recent works, the dolphin and bear.

May I suggest you consider adding a further dimension to this type of work by heavily rounding over the outline shape edges.

To achieve this I use a wood rasp or grinding bit (attached to a pedestal drill or a Dremmel). For example if the thickness of your dolphin box (cabinet) is 3/4" then you could afford to roll over that edge to leave slightly less than 1/4" surround of the drawer and similarly round the outer edges of the cabinet towards the centre line of the box.
