    Dropped my miter gage and ended up with this

    I dropped my miter gage and wanted to check it to make sure it was still square. After I checked it I decided to go ahead and use the pieces of wood I used to check it with to make a small box as I hadn't made one in awhile. With no idea as to what this box was going to look like I re cut the pieces into 4 equal sized mitered sides, then ran a groove in the bottom and a rabbit on top, cut a bottom to fit in the grooves and glued it up. while the glue was drying I cut a square piece for the top ran a rabbit around the bottom and cut a bevel on the sides. So I had my box but thought it was just to plane so I decided to add some splines so after digging through the scrap pile I decided to use some left over purple heart. Grabbed my spline jig and cut for the splines and glued them in. Then I decide it needed a handle on top but I didn't want something big or long, so after some deliberation a decided to cut some bevels on the end of a 3/4" x 3/4" piece of Ph and square cut it at the top of the bevels, I had my handle. I finish sanded every thing and glued the handle on and was going to finish it but decided it was still to plane looking, but didn't really know what else I wanted or could do to it to make it less plane. After some more thought I decide to put legs on the corners but didn't have enough 3/4 Ph to make four legs unless I ripped a strip off a wide piece. Not wanting to rip up one of my wide pieces I decided to go ahead and finish it the way it was. Then it hit me, make legs out of some thin stock I had used to make the splines out of. I made a cardboard template and cut four legs, a little filling and some sanding and I had my four legs. I put the legs on and applied the finish. Anyway sorry about the rambling I dropped my miter gage and ended up with this;

      OK, I'm going to run down to my shop and starting dropping all sorts of things. Maybe I'll be able to make something half as nice!

      Seriously though, nice work!

        That is very nice. I don't have accidents that work out like that.

            That looks awesome! Do you recommend we all start dropping our miter gauges now?

                Should I drop my Incra, Osborne, or Jet/Woodhaven? ...or maybe that plastic thing that came with my Homier sander!

                ....Beautiful work!

                  Just goes to show you that not all accidents have an unhappy ending. Very nice work.

                    Now if we could just drop some people on their heads and get that kind of results!

                    Great looking design and accent! Sure to be copied!

                      From how high do you need to drop it to get results like that? I have confirmed 36" is not high enough.

                      Great piece, love the handles and accents

                          Thanks all, I don't think I would start dropping things on purpose though The funny thing about it is I came home and noticed the box was missing so I asked my wife where it was and she said she gave it to the neighbor's sister Oh well at least I have pictures.

                            Okay, I tried dropping my miter gage and all I got was a busted miter gage!

                            That is very nice indeed, more a piece of art than a box.

                              Very nice box Now try dropping your wife from a height and maybe she'll stop giving things like that away.
