    Two Pen Commissions

Here's the latest from the shop. The top pen is an Classic American made from Spalted Maple. It has the inital cap, which you can't see. It's the first of the Classic American pens I've ever made, and let me tell you it's a LOT more complicated than a slimline or cigar pen! It's also the first time I was able to successfully do a CA finish. The customer didn't want a plastic look, so I didn't go heavy on it. I actually thought I was scraping the CA finish and sanding back to wood, but it turns out that I didn't sand through, and I'm quite pleased with the results. The pen was purchased as an anniversary gift for my coworker's husband. I'm honored that she would buy something that I made for that occasion (I'm sure it's not the only thing she's getting him, but still..).

The second pen was made for a friend/ coworker. It's a cigar pen in acrylic. The styling was done to mirror my favorite pen, except that I made the top heftier to give it a bit more of a balance. I think that this form will become a staple for my cigar pens. I hate turning acrylic, and it good form this pen is made from two separate blanks since the first top I turned exploded on me...

I think the spalted maple pen looks aboslutely fantastic. The shape of the blue pen is nice and does indeed look nicely balanced.

I'm just happy that the Classic America (Maple) pen turned out OK. It was the first time doing that type of pen, and given that it's a gift for someone's husband, it's a huge deal that I nail it.

I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite here. The blue is cool, but the maple is classic. Nice work on both!

Those are two of my favorite materials and colors for pens. Great job!

Both pens look great. I really like the maple one, I much prefer natural wood projects although I've never tried acrylic so maybe I should wait to judge.

It is nice to get paid for something you enjoy, isn't it?

I, too, like the Spalted Maple pen best.

Yeah, I'm selling a bunch (4 or 5) recently to people around here at work, but once that business is dried up, I'm wondering what other routes I can go. It seems Ebay is rather saturated, and no one is bidding, from what I see. So it looks like a website is in order. I don't know what else... craft shows?

A lot of people have said the Spalted Maple is great, but strangely enough they still find the acrylic more appealing because the color is so vibrant/ bold...
