    House warming gift.....

I am helping a good friend of mine move this Saturday into his new house. I know his wife drinks wine so last night and the night before I made this wine bottle holder for her.

He has already asked me to help him make new kitchen cabinets out of Oak so I thought I would make this out of Oak so it will match the future renovation.

        Cool little wine bottle holder.

How hard is it to get them to balance?

          Jim,
It is not hard to get it to balance. The angle on the bottom is 45 degrees and the weight of the bottle keeps it standing. I made the hole 1 9/16 inches but on the next one it will be smaller and at more of an angle thru the piece. This will cause the bottle to stand more upright.

That is neat. You said it's not hard to get em to balance...that begs the question, how DO you get them to balance??

The weight of the base obviously makes it fall over without the bottle in the hole. The bottom is cut at a 45 degree angle so by placing the bottle in the hole, the weight of it causes it to stay flat on whatever it is sitting on.

That is cool looking, never seen anything like that. Is pretty stable? Was it hard to find the center of balance? Does only a full bottle work?

Great work, these are always attention getters.

I think what everone is thinking but hasn't asked? Do you have any sketches, plans, etc you can share?

Very nice looking. I wonder if it would be possible to make one that holds more than one bottle.

(As a side note, if you like this wine bottle holder, you chould check out this cool bar trick using a toothpick and forks. it never ceases to amaze my friends when I do it.)

                      Eric,
I went home at lunch and brought the wine bottle holder back to work with me. I took it to one of our engineers offices and measured it out with a ruler while he drew it up on CimCad. A few of the dimensions are based on what the computer says but I think you can figure it out from here.

                        Ric,
It is very stable and no it was not hard to get the bottle to balance in the hole. The closer the main body of the bottle is to the wood it makes it more stable. The farther away if bumped the bottle can swing from side to side a little but I did not get it to fall over.

The way you see it is just how it will sit either on her counter or cornice shelf that we will be making for above the kitchen window.

She wants a cornice just like this one that I had in my old house.

Looks great Grant! Sorry I didn't post the specs on mine earlier but they're up now in the other thread for anyone else who's interested. The person who gave us that stand as a gift actually was a little more aggressive with the angle he drilled the hole at. It was straight through at a right angle. It is slightly less stable but the angle is really cool. As far as if it works with an opened bottle, well I don't know... opened bottles have a tendency to disappear pretty quickly in our house

I really like the taper you put on your stand, very classy! It looks great!
