    entryway bench and coat storage

Not quite finished as I still have to make the drawers but I wanted to post it anyway. This started out as an idea from Pottery Barn. (I get lots of ideas from their catalogs.)http://www.potterybarn.com/products/...8&tool=vLarger
I modified it to meet my needs by making it larger to fit my space and I designed the toe kick to be taller and deeper so you can slide shoes under it but they won't get lost.

It is about 7' tall and 5' wide. I built it in two pieces the bench and the shelving so I could get it in the house. The face frame is poplar with mdf shelving. The back panel is wainscoting in poplar frames. I purchased a Kreig pocket hole jig to build this with man it is a great tool. Wish I had it sooner.
The bench top is heart pine flooring that I salvaged when I remodeled my kitchen. It has some dents and digs but those give it an older feel and I love the look of that wood.
The hardest part of this project was the glue up mainly due to the size of the top unit. Painting it wasn't easy either. I followed the recommendations in a recent Wood magazine article that proved helpful.

Great design and I agree about the beauty of the reclaimed flooring as the bench top. That and the backing really set it off!

Great looking project. I like the solid wood top contrasted against the white.

All around a great design and very well done. I also like the natural wood with the paint, and the back really sets it off.

The baskets give a nice contrast in color and texture. I wonder if you couldn't use larger ones down below instead of drawers.

That would look nice in my house. Nice work on a very useable project.

Good job! as the others have said, I like the contrast of the paint with the pine bench top.
Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that! -Rocky Balboa-

                      That really rocks the house.

My wife has been on me to build that same thing, but with 4 closets. It is for our mud room that is 9' wide.

I am torn as to whether or not I should show her how nice yours is, or hide it from her forever so that she can not ever compare yours to whatever I wind up building out there.

So I guess it is not an actual built in? But instead a perfect fitting piece of furniture, or did you just assemble it in your shop for convienece?

                      Thanks for the peek.

                      Lee
