    Quilt Rack

I've done a couple of these. This one for my MIL from Maple. With siblings and in-laws having so many kids, I built a full size template from hardboard. It includes holes for the mortises. I use a flush trim bit to get identical sides, then use a collar in the router to make the mortises ensuring they'll align perfectly on the 2 sides.

Nice work, Eric and thanks for the details on the templates. Being pretty green with a router it gave me another perspective.

The template was a good idea, Eric. A quilt rack as nice as that is sure to generate a bunch of requests!

A good looking quilt rack and an even better tip about the templates.

I like the color of the maple a lot. What did you use to finish it?

Thanks for the comments. If I think I'm going to make more then 1 of something I usually like to make hardboard templates. This rack was the 4th I've done, the templates really speeds the process up.

I finished this with 2 coats of General Finishes Oil and Urenthane Top Coat for a base then followed it with 3 coats of General Finishes Polycrylic water base Topcoat. All applied with a foam brush.

This receipe came from Workbench a while ago, it turned out great. The oil gave it a slight amber glow and made the curl pop. Then the waterbase gave it more depth and protection without altering the color any further.

This was the first time I used General Finishes and it's by far the best finish I've ever done. It might be twice as expensive as Minwax but the results were at least 3 times as good.

Nice! My wife has been asking for one of these and I never really knew what the heck she was talking about!

Did you build from plans, or is it an original design?
