Chess Board from 3 pieces of scrap =)

Here's another project I finished recently. Every time I have the right size scrap pieces laying around I use them to build a chess board. This one was from 2 pieces of hard maple (left over from the rocking horse), and 1 piece of walnut.

I have a rather lengthy tutorial online, but I don't know if it's appropriate to post because it has some ads.

I took about 100 pictures of the process this time through. (new camera!) Here are a few of them... You'll hopefully recognize the table saw

Let me know what you think!

Cutting & arranging squares (my method uses two backer boards), framing, and -- my personal favorite -- buffing the finish.

Beautiful chessboard, bud! The look of excitement from the future Kasparov is priceless.

Sure. It's pretty lengthy: around 5,100 words with about 65 photos (maybe I went a little overboard, but I was encouraged by a number of friends to get it online and I wanted to make it detailed enough so that anyone could do it.)

LOL, let's hope so! Right now though I think he'd prefer to help daddy build things than sit still and play a game. We'll see...

ImageMagick is a pretty cool little utility. I just wish it weren't so difficult to ramp up on.

THanks for all your great comments! I wish I'd joined this forum earlier!!!
