    Rocking Horse (uh, what now?)

Hi all. I'm pretty much new here, but I've been using the 3100 for a few years now. This is my first post.

Anyway, here's a rocking horse I built for my son (and for my neice previously). So now I have a baby girl and I have no idea what type of equivalent gift I should build her... Any ideas?

I used plans from a book called The Family Handyman: Toys, Games, and Furniture (ISBN: 0895777908), published September 1, 1995. It looks like it might be out of print now, but Amazon shows a bunch listed used and new for as little as about $5. Great deal, considering the plans sell separately for nearly $14!

It's cherry & hard maple. The eyes are walnut. Let me know what you think!

Welcome aboard, Alex. Very nice work. No suggestions on your next project though, unless something happens to come to mind.

Chapel Hill eh? I'm not all that far away from you.

As for what to build your daughter, a doll cradle is the first thing that comes to mind. On the other hand, you can build her a work bench. My daughter is 2 and already likes to 'help Daddy in the shop'. She has her own hammer and screwdriver.

        Hey there, neighbor!

A doll cradle is a great idea. I was also considering a doll house, but I think I'd be too tempted to rip to-scale framing lumber and built it like a real house. All of this is assuming, of course, that she ends up more a girly girl than a tomboy. In hindsight, I should have probably built the boy an earth mover of some sort and the girl the rocking horse. Of course, he does love that rocking horse... Aw, heck. I don't know...

Hmm... maybe a treasure chest of keepsake box. I'll have to keep my eyes open for some good plans.

Thanks for the input so far!

          Hi Alex,

Welcome to the forum! That rocking horse is very nice.

There's nothing to say you can't do a "girl" version of the rocking horse. Instead of a clear finish, it could have pink and/or lavender paint. Make it a unicorn; girls like fantasy things.

The doll-house is a good idea, too. Once again, girls like it when there's a cool theme - Rapunzel or Cinderalla or something like that. There are several princesses currently in vogue whose themes would be good.

                  Welcome to the Asylum, Alex!

The rocking horse looks great. Sure to be handed down someday, there will be a long line waiting for it!

I've made doll cradles for two of my granddaughters. I've also made rocking motorcycles complete with teddy bear in the side car for two of them and a rocking horse for one. All were very well received!

I would say a doll cradle would be nice, because even if she isn't into dolls and has some stuff animals or something she can use it for putting those kinds of things in it.

But the one thing that I wish I had as a girl growing up was a "hope" chest of some sorts. Either a medium size one or a larger version of one. Somewhere to store things that I wanted to keep instead of in a plastic box.

HeHeHe - the "rocking motorcycle" was the first thing my mind went to. The cradle is a solid popular choice, but I have to admit that one of those "marble machines" like Popeye built http://www.bt3central.com/showthread.php?t=27270 seems like a great idea to entertain young & old alike.

Wow, what a cool idea. That marble machine does in fact look entertaining. So far the wife likes the cradle and hope chest ideas best, but I'll have to show her this one as well -- maybe I'll have to build it for myself!

Thanks for all the great tips and comments so far! This forum rocks!
