    Small frame made from "firewood"

I noticed some nice figure in a piece of firewood recently, so for chuckles I decided to mill it. I'm not 100% sure of the species....

I made this frame to hold a picture of my Dad that I received after he passed away last November. I think he would have gotten a kick out of the idea of salvaging some nice looking wood from the woodpile.

The single-kerf splines are cherry, and the total size is something like 5" x 7". Miters were cut on the SCMS, and then tweaked on a shooting board. The finish is my usual wipe-on gloss poly.

    Tom,

That is some really nice work. I've been burning some interesting looking pieces the last couple days. I may have to save 1 or 2 and see what I can make from them.

That was a great save on your part. It appears to be some high quality curly maple. You have to wonder just how many masterpieces are relegated to burning every day. Great job. I'm sure your Dad would have given a thumbs up.

Wow Tom, that looks great, nice save.

Any chance you have a "before" pic of the firewood?

          Kristofor.

That's beautiful Tom, in more ways than one.
You just know your Dad is smiling down at it, just like in the picture.
              Well done.

Tom, that really is very nice. Amazing you can get chatoyance like that in what's supposed to be firewood. I think half the fun of building that frame probably came from finding the wood to begin with.

nice curly maple you've got. I had a piece of curly swamp white oak, I milled from firewood once, and it was great.

                      That looks great, Tom.

Brian eyes his stack of firewood, contemplating whether any of it has a chance of showing chatoyance (which, thanks to Anna, is now Brian's new favorite word)

Thanks for the kind comments, folks!

I should have taken a "before" pic of this piece of firewood. Since this piece was split along the grain, it was interesting to see the undulations of the surface, and how this waviness of the fibers makes for the "curliness" of the grain.

Somehow, the coloration prior to finish didn't quite strike me as maple. Sure looks like Maple in these pics, though.

                          Regards,
Tom (who takes a little more time picking out which logs are OK to burn, while practicing his pronunciation of cha- cha- chatoyance )
